The Square Knot

Learning macrame is both a creative and meditative process. The Square Knot is one of the most fundamental knots you’ll need to master as a beginner. It’s versatile, easy to learn, and can be used in various macrame projects like wall hangings, plant hangers, and more. This step-by-step guide will walk you through the process of creating a Square Knot.

What You'll Need:
Cord:  Choose a macrame cord that is about 3-5mm thick for easy handling.
Scissors
Measuring tape: To ensure consistent knot sizes.

Step-by-Step Instructions:

Step 1

Prepare Your Cords
Cut four pieces of cord, each about 2-3 feet long. Fold them in half and attach them to your working surface using a clip or tape, or secure them to a dowel rod using a Lark’s Head Knot.

Step 2

Arrange the Cords
You will have four cords:
The two outside cords are your **working cords**.
The two inner cords are your **filler cords*

Step 3

Create the First Half of the Knot
Take the left working cord (Cord A) and cross it over the filler cords.
Now, take the right working cord (Cord D) and cross it over Cord A, then pass it under the filler cords and pull it through the loop formed by Cord A on the left side.

Step 4

Tighten the Knot
Pull both working cords to tighten the knot around the filler cords. You've just completed the first half of the Square Knot.

Step 5

Create the Second Half
Take the right working cord (Cord D) and cross it over the filler cords.
Now, take the left working cord (Cord A) and cross it over Cord D, then pass it under the filler cords and pull it through the loop formed by Cord D on the right side.

Step 6

Tighten Again
Pull both working cords to secure the second half of the knot. You’ve now completed a full Square Knot!

This Square Knot will serve as the foundation for many of your macrame projects. Whether you’re creating intricate wall designs or simple bracelets, mastering this knot is a must for any beginner.

Happy knotting!
